Competition cheer squad prepares for upcoming season
Aside from sideline cheer for the OHHS basketball teams, thirteen talented cheerleaders make up the competition squad. With the exceptional coaching of head coach Robin Gohn and assistant coach Lauren Albritton, the team has been working hard the past two months getting ready for their first competition.
Only allowed two minutes and thirty seconds to wow the panel of judges, the cheerleaders perform a rigorous routine consisting of jumps, chants, dances, tumbling, and jaw dropping stunts. The team practices nearly every day, putting forth valiant efforts and dedication.
Last season the team qualified for state and took home fourth place overall in the all-girl small division. This year they’ve added a couple new faces and will be competing in the same division, hoping to come out on top.
This season is extra special for some of the cheerleaders. There are three different pairs of siblings working alongside each other. Senior Beckie White and junior Jillian White have been cheering together since youth league. Both girls are very admirable cheerleaders, especially when it comes to flying.
“I’m sad my sister is graduating, but I’m more proud of her than I am sad that she’s leaving. It will be weird cheering without her considering how I never have, but I know she’ll be proud to see me continuing on, so that’s what I plan on doing,” said Jillian White.
The next sibling duo consists of senior Colby Lock and freshman Aubrey Lock. According to their mom, they’ve wanted to cheer together on a high school team ever since they were little. They wanted it so bad that they bumped Aubrey up a grade so she could start high school before her sister graduated.
The last pair on the team are freshman Angel Williams and junior Tyler O’Dell. Like the White sisters, they’ve also had experience cheering side by side. This is their fourth year together. Although it’s both their first year cheering at OHHS, they were on a team together at Ice Athletics.
The rest of the adept squad is made up of sophomore Mariah Dohzier and juniors Elizabeth Adkins, Chylah Bass, Jade Brown, Micaiah Davis, Raeanna Wynne, and Jember Jansen. Many of these cheerleaders have been cheering together for years making their high-spirited team that much stronger.
Wynne expresses her goals for this year’s team.
“Our hopes for this season are extremely high; we won’t stop short of perfection. There’s no doubt in my mind that we will do whatever it takes to go above and beyond this weekend at our first state qualifier. We’re looking forward to the first of many victories this weekend.”
